What is ISO 42001?
ISO 42001 is the international standard for AI Management Systems (AIMS). Published in December 2023, it defines the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an AI management system within an organization. Think of it as ISO 9001 — but for AI.
Who does it apply to?
Any organization that develops, provides, or uses AI systems in its products or services. This includes enterprises deploying AI internally, technology companies building AI products, and organizations using third-party AI tools at scale.
Is it mandatory?
Not globally — yet. However, the EU AI Act references ISO 42001 as a harmonized standard, meaning compliance with it can demonstrate compliance with the Act. Organizations operating in the EU that deploy AI in regulated contexts should treat it as effectively mandatory.
What does certification look like?
Like other ISO management system standards, ISO 42001 certification requires an independent third-party audit. Organizations must demonstrate a documented AI management system, including risk assessment, policy, controls, and continuous improvement mechanisms.
